How do you stay above the stress as an Engineering Major?

I have heard a lot about majoring in Engineering, and most of what I heard is the amount of stress students experience. I am curious if there are specific ways of managing it for this particular major, like studying methods, or ways to get through the entirety of studying in this field!

Hi Jalyeha,
Real life, in general, comes with challenges. Persuing a professional course & career is no exception. When what we love doing most is also what we are truly good at, our path to success becomes a lot easier. We are then able to optimize our time effectively - work, play, leisure, social gatherings, community involvement etc.
Engineering is about applying basic concepts and principles to resolve some of humanity's many challenges. Mastery of these concepts and principles stems from our deep understanding of them. Ability to approach them from first principles is very helpful in minimizing the amount of time spent in studies. Mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer applications, design and graphics provide the main foundation for any engineering course.
Passing your exams well is important. Putting the knowledge and skills you acquire to good use is even more important as this touches people's lives in many ways - movement, work, accomodation, leisure, comfort, communication etc. This often is a vital source of motivation and perseverance.
As engineers, our true mission remains meeting the needs of society that require engineering solutions. Sacrifices are essential in achieving this.

Hi Jalyeha,
As a now-retired engineer, this profession is a challenge, but it’s one definitely worth the effort. Striking a balance between studying and a social life is the key. There are some fine study books you might check out (“How to Study, 25th Anniversary Edition” by Ron Fry and “The Ultimate Guide to College Success” by Kendall Bright). But to get real, your social life is important to success in life. It teaches about networking skills, how to interact with different personalities, and, yes, it can be fun! There are two extremes I remember from college: the first guy used to study weekdays EVERY night until 10 pm, whether he had no homework, an exam, or a final the next day. He graduated at the top of our class, but was considered a loner and a recluse. My next door classmate partied hearty, studied only when he had homework and pulled all-nighters before exams. He flunked out the first year. Somewhere in between is the sweet spot. Also consider learning how to meditate or using mindfulness techniques. Enjoy your adventure. Life as a successful engineer is a great one.

To handle stress well as an Engineering major, dive into problem-solving and active learning by practicing regularly and teaching others. Keep your notes clear and use diagrams to make tough ideas easier to understand. Study in focused sessions using methods like Pomodoro, and join study groups with classmates. Start with the hardest topics and try to understand the reasons behind formulas instead of just memorizing them. Use online resources and practice with past exams to strengthen your learning.

Look after yourself by practicing mindfulness, exercising often, eating well, and getting enough sleep. Take breaks to prevent burnout, and don’t be afraid to ask for help from professors or friends. Keep your spirits high by thinking about your long-term goals and celebrating small achievements. By managing your time well and balancing study with self-care, you can excel in your Engineering major while staying healthy.
