I am going to be a Junior in College next Semester majoring in Math and CS, I am looking for universities right now and was wondering which ones would be good to look at.

Hey Finn,

That’s awesome you’re already thinking ahead for your master’s, it’s gonna set you up for a strong future. When it comes to great universities, a few names really stand out: MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, and Princeton all have top-tier programs for Math and CS. But honestly, it’s not just about the "big name" schools. A lot of other universities like Georgia Tech, University of Washington, UIUC (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), and UT Austin have incredible programs too, and they might be a better fit depending on your vibe, budget, and what kind of environment you’re looking for.

Something else to think about, is to check if the school has strong research opportunities, a good network for internships, and professors doing work you’re excited about. Those can matter just as much, sometimes even more, than the name on the diploma.

Also, don't be afraid to email a few grad students or professors from the schools you’re interested in. Most people are pretty chill about answering questions, and it can give you a better feel for the program.

You’re definitely in a good spot thinking about this early. You got this, man, feel free to reach out if I missed anything and wishing you all the best.

Karin’s Answer

Hi Finn,

A masters program is a specialization or a focus. Which universities would be a good fit FOR YOU depends on your interests and your goals. Where do you want to take the degree? Are you leaning more towards math or towards CS? Are you going to do a PhD? Do you want to go into research or are you planning to work in industry? University ranking is not everything.

Some universities might offer several masters programs with different specialties to pick. Stanford CS e.g. offers 9 different options. Georgia Tech CS has 11 different options. Others might just have one program (or 2 if you count math and CS separately). So, you really need to do some soul searching where you want to go from here and what you enjoy most.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
