What skill or mindset separates successful leaders in the industry from those who do not stand out What is one lesson you learned early in your career that you wish you had known before entering the industry??

I am a sophomore who attends Ohio University, majoring in sports management and minoring in advertising and public relations. I am interested in working in sports announcing or entertainment, and I hope to find an internship in that field. I am involved in 5 organizations on campus that surround me with peers who help me grow personally and professionally.

From what I've seen, having emotional intelligence is really important for becoming more professional and efficient.

Even if you have the right skills and know-how, emotions like anger and worry can pull you away from your goals. Understanding and managing your feelings can greatly improve your ability to make important and smart choices at work.

Good leaders exhibit a combination of personal attributes, skills, and behaviors that enable them to inspire and guide others effectively. Key qualities include integrity, empathy, communication, vision, adaptability, and the ability to empower and motivate their teams.

Leadership isn't easy, you'll need to listen, be flexible, curious and practice restraint - especially in the entertainment space where ego's are large and jobs are scarce.

Successful leaders have important qualities like vision, empathy, integrity, and the ability to build trust. I've worked with leaders and managers who lacked these traits, and they didn't perform well. However, those who had these qualities excelled in the marketplace and had a team willing to do anything for success. As a leader, I learned early on that you must take full responsibility for everything that happens. Your team respects you more when they know you'll support them. It's also important to be transparent, communicate clearly, be honest, and hold people accountable. When the team knows you're straightforward, they respect you even more, which is crucial for teamwork.
