How do I know I am not messing up my life?

Hello Career Village! I am a 2nd-year college student at RPI, and I've come to a point in my life where I am in this shell and can't seem to break out of it because I am afraid of taking risks in my academic career. I have so many ambitions I want to tackle, but as I am finally getting the courage to take on the opportunity presented in front of me, these malicious thoughts creep in and start to invade every motivation I had initially, and ultimately, I walk away. My question is, how can I have confidence and trust in my capabilities?

Karla’s Answer

Hello, from my experience, feeling overwhelmed and anxious is common. I've discovered that when we're anxious, we tend to see everything as a potential threat because our brain wants to keep us safe. I've learned to manage this feeling by practicing mindfulness and attending therapy.

Fear? At this point in your life young lady, fear is the last thing you should have popped up. The world is your oyster young lady. Two years in college sitting around in a classroom is not life, it's just college. Thats all it is. When you graduate, all you will have is a degree in hand and the need to find a job. That job may or may not be in the field that you studied, because let's face the facts, you still need to pay rent, eat, buy or maintain a lifestyle, etc. etc. etc.

Lifes not going to understand your pity party young lady. What it will understand is your ability to act, one step at a time, one goal at a time, one accomplishment at a time, you have too many ambitions to tackle yes but they don't need to be tackled together. You already have the courage because you wake up in the morning and start your day, studying, mingling, and doing all the wonderful things college is great for.

Your malicious thoughts are just movies you keep playing in your mind's eye, repeatedly. Since the human brain does not recognize words, it will set the images as fact into your sub conscious, leading you to believe what you feed it when doubt and uncertainty creep in and manipulate your action.

As a former trained & practiced professional Hypnotis as well as Stage Hypnotist, I now use visualization techniques to help those I work with to see what is positive in outcome and relative in practice.
My suggestion to you is to seek out a martial arts, qi gung, Tai qi type program which can help release stress, improve your focus, and relax your anxiety, and tranquil your mind.

You don't need motivation, as one can motivate an idiot but all they would have is a motivated idiot running around motivated.
You don't need self induced fear, because you are not a fortune teller, so theirs nothing to be afraid of. If you fall, as well all do, just fall forward.

Each accomplishment will drift away as soon as it is achieved, waiting for the next goal that you have chosen to tackle & accomplish.

So be at peace young warrior, for you have been blessed, but are too busy with the self-imposed drama to even recognize the that sun shines every day and the Earth invites you to join in with the rest of us.

You got this. Easy Peasy
