Hi Meng,
That's a great field and major, but I think a bit challenging given that this field evolved in the fast pace! In my opinion here are some key skills that a product manager in AI should possess:
Technical expertise: A deep understanding of AI technologies and concepts like knowledge of machine learning algorithms, computer vision, and etc. depending on your company
A product manager needs to understand the market, competition, and business strategy
AI product managers should be able to identify and analyze problems and opportunities, then design and implement solutions
Also very important to be able to work with unknowns and ambiguity and continuous learning is essential
Data analysis: Analyzing data to derive insights and make informed decisions is a critical skill for AI product managers. This includes understanding data sources, data processing techniques, and statistical methods.
Understanding the needs and pain points of customers is essential
Communication skills: You would probably will work with a lot of teams and need to explain them all your vision
Leadership: A product manager should be able to lead cross-functional teams, manage stakeholders, and make tough decisions
Ethics: As AI has the potential to impact society in significant ways, product managers should have a strong understanding of ethical considerations
These are some of the skills that are important in my opinion to you if you would choose this pass

As a product manager for AI products, you need a mix of traditional skills and a strong understanding of AI. Here are the key skills you should focus on:

1. Technical Skills:
- Understand AI basics like machine learning, deep learning, and neural networks. You should know terms and concepts even if you're not a data scientist.
- Learn how data is used in AI, including collection, cleaning, and storage. Be aware of data quality, bias, and privacy laws.
- Get familiar with AI tools like TensorFlow and PyTorch, and understand how AI models are deployed and monitored.
- Know the limits of AI models and the importance of explainability to build trust.
- Assess if AI solutions are technically possible and turn complex AI ideas into product requirements.

2. Strategic and Business Skills:
- Develop a clear product vision and strategy that aligns with business goals and market trends.
- Use data to make decisions and measure product success.
- Understand customer needs and how AI can solve their problems.
- Conduct market research to find opportunities and stay updated on AI trends.
- Focus on delivering business value and showing the return on investment for AI projects.
- Prioritize features and create realistic product roadmaps.

3. Collaboration and Communication Skills:
- Work well with different teams like data scientists, engineers, designers, and sales.
- Simplify complex AI concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Lead teams and align them with the product vision.
- Manage stakeholder expectations and ensure everyone is on the same page.
- Solve problems creatively and adapt quickly to changes in the AI field.
- Understand ethical issues in AI and promote responsible practices.
- Know basic user experience principles to ensure AI products are user-friendly and trustworthy.

In short, an AI product manager needs strong strategic, customer-focused, and communication skills, along with a good technical understanding of AI and data.

Martha’s Answer

Hi Meng, this is a timely and interesting question - thanks for asking. I like the breadth of both articles linked below. The key points for me are:
- Knowledge of and comfort with technology is very important but not all you need to be a successful AI product manager. You also need management and communications skills
- Along with general understanding of technology stacks, you need to understand how to build and use data responsibly. This includes how it sourced, how it is used, and how bias may affect outcomes
- You need to be organized and methodical to manage any project, but especially complex ones
- Soft skills are important for working in and managing teams and working with your internal and external customers. This includes strong listening skills, which is a key part of building trust.
- Especially in an evolving field like AI, stay curious and open to learning. This doesn't just mean structured classes, but also professional associations, workshops, articles, online learning, from peers, and more
I hope this helps - good luck!
