I am not a painter, but I have some experience as a fine artist. I have painted a few cars and parts of cars. Painting houses can be a lengthy process, often involving a messy and tedious workload that is not very glamorous. If you appreciate houses like those in my hometown of San Francisco, there is potential for enjoyment in this work. Bob Buckter is a notable figure in this field and has been active since the late 1960s during the Haight-Ashbury era.
In contrast, cars are smaller projects that one can typically complete in three to four days, depending on various factors. The new paint technology available is impressive, as it is more environmentally friendly and allows for greater creative expression. Some considerations include the demand for this work in your area, insurance costs, and whether you prefer to work independently or as an employee.
During high school and college summers, I worked at a local car dealership, where I gained exposure to different tasks that helped me understand my interest and satisfaction in this type of work. If you anticipate spending 30 to 40 years in your career, it is essential to choose something that is both creative and fulfilling. Once you find an area of interest, it is important to research the specifics, as significant earnings often come from being able to delegate tasks to others.

Hello Julian, it’s good to know that at a young age like this, you already have a definite goal. If you’re in middle school, the first suggestible step is to start painting and get a feel for it on smaller projects, such as on wood boards, bikes, or even art projects, to help develop steady hands and attention to detail. Later, in high school, you could investigate classes in art, shop, or, if your high school offers such a program, automotive.
To become a car paint specialist, many people go to trade school after high school, which can take 1–2 years, while house painting can often be learned through apprenticeships or starting as a helper. As for time, painting a car can take anywhere from a couple of days to a week, depending on prep work, while painting a house can range from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on size. If you stay consistent and curious, you can start building the skills now that will make you stand out later.
I hope this helps you make future decisions. Good luck!
