Jesus,

Mr. Breen provided great advice!

I will also add that along with passing the bar exam, there is also a "character" assessment involved. Each state may be different. Those who, for the most part, keep their nose clean will have no problem. Those with criminal records, poor credit history, expulsion from college due to plagiarism/violence/cheating, or other fraudulent activities may face challenges -- though these challenges do not automatically mean someone cannot be a lawyer. For example, if a student works to make a payment plan with a bank for a debt that is not being paid timely and provides proof to the bar examiners, poor credit history may not be a factor. Nobody is perfect, but the cleaner your record, the better.

A.’s Answer

Hi, Jesus. To sum it all up, to be a lawyer, you first finish high school, then college, then law school. After that, you take a big test called the bar exam. Once you pass, you can practice law.

You need strong reading, writing, and speaking skills, and the ability to think through problems carefully.

The biggest challenges lawyers face today are keeping up with new technology, balancing heavy workloads, and finding fair solutions when people disagree.

I wish you the best luck and look forward to you becoming a part of the profession!

DENNIS’s Answer

Hi Jesus: Wow- Crane Middle school has had a lot of activity this week! Let's take your question in steps.
1) After High school you need to go onto a college. University. of Az. is a great place. After college you need to go to law school. After law school you need to pass the Bar exam in the State you want to practice law in . After passing the bar you will be admitted to the practice in that State and you can be a lawyer. 4 years high school, 4 years college, 3 years law school. Those are the steps you need to take to become a lawyer.
2 ) What you need to be a lawyer is complicated. You need a good brain to get through all the tests and schools. You need a good heart because being a lawyer is about helping people. You need to care. As I tell lawyers who I have worked with over the years, clients come to a lawyer for their brains and their heart. Finally, you need a good sense of yourself.
3) The challengers are many. Ethics issues (can you represent someone) Client issues (they don't want to follow your advice) time issues (courts set limits on things) Learning - you have to learn something new with every case! There are many more!
Jesus- as an 8th grader I'd suggest you go out, play ball, get good grades - those Crane Middle School teachers seem to care about you guys- have fun . The best lawyers I know are good good people who worked hard to become lawyers but never forgot who they were. Grow up, have fun, keep an open mind and let life lead you where it can. Good luck Jesus - you have a great future ahead of you!

Good Day Jesus!

What a lawyer must do is understand the undesirable situation faced by an individual, and pursue legal redress, seeking to rectify the wrongs, by an appropriate process of serving justice.
