Hi Carla. It seems I was in your position not long ago. Unfortunately, it was over 45 years ago! In fact, I am now semi-retired. The advise that has already been given to you is excellent and I cannot add much. However, since I was in your position once, I can try to add something a little different. I had to make some very major decisions to plan my career path and you will too. My intention was to pursue an Obstetrical specialty and help bring babies into the world. I felt it was a very worthwhile cause and something that I would look forward to hopefully every day that I went to work. Well, things did not happen according to my plans in spite of trying to do all the things teachers, counselors and other individuals advised me to do. What did happen is that my research took me to a path called Podiatry (Foot and Ankle Specialist). I knew very little about it. It turns out, Podiatry has become in large part a Surgical Specialty and, after completing my college education, a College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery and a Residency program, the rest is a wonderful story for me. I spent quite a bit of time in the operating room like you may be aspiring to do. In general, I had a very successful and rewarding career. My advise is, if your plans do not take you where you want to go, look for alternatives that may just work out very well for you. Visit and learn about other health professions that are out there now. Do not get discouraged because, many times, in the end things just work out fine. Study and work hard and I believe you will be rewarded for your effort. But also, take time to enjoy life.

Hi there, you have SO SO much time before you need to settle on a career path/college major/plan but it is great that you have such big career/life goals and aspirations. I would at this age really try and keep an open mind about career goals/schools and for now enjoy being a kid, work hard in school, maybe do some volunteer work locally or get involved in healthcare related clubs. You have so much time to plan for/work towards getting into medical school and those years are long/hard so do NOT worry about that at this time.
College, medical school, residency, possible fellowship. There are so many residencies/physician specialties that involve surgery other than simply general surgery (OBGYN, pediatric surgery, orthopedic surgery, vascular surgery, interventional radiology, interventional cardiology, cardio-thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, and more). You can shadow people, ask to interview or get advice from different types of doctors/surgeons, maybe even become a scrub tech or scribe!
Hope this helps,

Fortunately, you have lots of time to take this journey. Take things gradually, and enjoy each step. To be any kind of physician, you will need to do very well in school, while also demonstrating leadership and extra-curricular talents. Yes there are core requirements in math and science, but medical schools are looking for well-rounded individuals. Enjoy, therefore, music, sports, art, theater... Find volunteer opportunities that align with your core values. Realize that it is common and OK to change paths as your life experience guides you.

To become a surgeon, you'll need to finish your college degree, get into medical school, and then apply for a surgical residency. Focus on your high school courses and choose something you love for college. Don't forget to include science classes like chemistry, biology, computer science, and math. It's great to major in something you enjoy because you might change your career path, and if medical school doesn't work out right away, you'll have a backup plan. Keep going; you can do it!
