Hi Helen,
Even though I'm not an expert baker, I really admire the value in baking. The skills you gain from it—like patience, time management, strategic thinking, and project management—are so useful in many areas of life.
Baking is a lot like project management. It's all about paying attention to details and following the process. Just like with baking, where overmixing or leaving something in the oven too long can ruin it, the same goes for work. It's important to be both efficient and effective.
I've noticed many students selling their baked goods as a side hustle or for fundraising. This can inspire you to think like an entrepreneur. Who knows? Baking could be the first step toward even bigger dreams in the future. I wish you all the best with your plans, and remember to enjoy the journey!

Hi Helen,
Thanks for reaching out about baking! It's a topic I love, and I'm excited to share some thoughts with you. Whether you're thinking about it as a hobby or a career, diving in a bit will help you decide. Hobbies are fun and relaxing, while a career needs more time and skill building.
Baking is all about practice and putting your personal touch on your creations. You'll learn a lot from measuring, mixing, and kneading. When I learned to make bread from my dad, I discovered how the dough should feel when it's ready.
Having the right tools is important, but they don't have to be the best—just what works for you. Patience and persistence are key because not everything will turn out perfectly every time.
Try jotting down some ideas of what you'd like to bake, like cupcakes or cookies. Think about how you want them to look and taste. Start with one or two recipes and practice. If decorating interests you, try practicing on cardboard or store-bought cakes to save on supplies.
If you find that baking is your passion, consider volunteering or getting a job at a bakery to learn and gain experience.

A career in baking could take you on many different job and/or business opportunities. You can find a job at a small local family owned bakery or you can work for a large corporate restaurant chain that focuses on daily fresh baked breads. Or depending on how far into the industry you could work for some of the leading bakery companies by doing consulting on products and even product development.
When I first started working after culinary school, I went into working for a Pastry/Bake Shop for a large private company in California. The executive chef there noticed my attention to detail and pulled me from daily production to only making the pastries and deserts for their upscale restaurant. I worked my way up and kept learning, growing and thriving in the industry.
And if corporate isn’t for you, there’s always the opportunity to open your own bakery. Just like any other area of culinary arts, baking is a very special unique area of cooking. It’s not a little of this a little of that. It’s a precise art. It’s chemistry, it’s atmospheric, and it commands loyalty. This is something that comes from you and cannot be learned. And your knowledge is priceless, and nobody can take that from you. Bake a cookie or bake a billion cookies, either would be a breeze for someone with passion. In whichever direction you choose to go, do it with passion, hard work, and pride.
