Should I start high school baseball my junior year?

The baseball coach wants me to join the baseball team. I've never played before and I'm going in to my Junior year of high school. I'm really athletic and am good at basketball. The league we play in is a small christian league. What should I do?

Paul’s Answer

We always take a certain amount of risk, when we attempt something new, especially if it is a new sport that we have never attempted before.

There is one individual, who we remember as a great basketball player and a coach in history (John Wooden) who we consider to be one of the best in basketball. But, the fact is John Wooden turned out to be a better baseball player, than a basketball player, and could have been a pro in the sport had he pursued it seriously. This was one regret that he later had in life. Danny Ainge and Dave Debusschere, are also good examples of athletes who were great basketball and baseball players.

To try a new sport, make sure that it is something that interests you, and has a supportive community, and start with the basics to gradually build skills and avoid injury.

Be patient with yourself, embrace the process of learning and making mistakes, and remember the wide-ranging benefits, from improved physical health to enhanced cognitive function and new friendships.

I hope this has been helpful.

Hi Jude,
I would absolutely encourage you to take the chance and try the new sport, especially with the coach directly advocating for you. Sports will benefit you in so many different ways: Building team skills, prioritizing an active lifestyle and health, socialization and agility. In addition, if you start now while you're young, at trying new things, it's likely a habit you will continue on through life!

What's the worse that can happen, you learn you don't like it...but even then, you're growing to know YOU!

In addition, baseball is one of those sports where there will be opportunities throughout life. Young adult leagues, church & community leagues. Knowing the skills now will open up future opportunities to maintain an active lifestyle and build community!

Karin’s Answer

Hi Jude,

There is no right or wrong answer here. If you think you would enjoy baseball, give it a try. If you end up not liking it, you can always drop it.

Before you make a decision, consider the additional time commitment as well as your need for transportation and any costs associated with playing. Also consider what you might gain from starting a new activity.

If you are not so keen to begin with or would rather spend your time doing something else, just politely decline.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Give it a try! I felt the same way in high school, unsure if I was good enough. But if the coach is encouraging you, it's definitely worth exploring. It's a great opportunity to make friends, not just with your teammates but also with opponents. Plus, playing baseball is a lot of fun.

Phil’s Answer

Hi Jude,

New things make you grow, I would recommend giving it a shot for the season. Worst case is you find out its not for you but along the way you'll further develop as an athlete and a person. Being a multi sport athlete will help your primary sport as well. You'll find that be exposed to new and different movements will transfer over to your basketball development. Best case is you find out you really really like baseball and will have rewarded yourself by doing something that is a little uncomfortable now and brings you joy into the future. Coaches will see you have a great demeanor to try new things. Go for it!

Hi Jude! If baseball won't get in the way of your main sport, basketball, you should definitely give it a try! Exploring something new and challenging can help you grow both as a person and as an athlete. Plus, you might play a big part in the team's success, which can be really rewarding. Joining a new team also lets you make new friends and build bonds you might not have otherwise.

Think about the coach, too. If it's someone you like and respect, you'll probably have a great time. Hope this helps, and good luck!
