What should I do as a 16 year old who cannot get employed?

I have no working experience, but do have social skills. I am not allowed to babysit nor have social media. I want to make my own money, so I can save for college.

Hi Nevaeh,

Consider exploring job opportunities in food service or retail. These areas often have many openings, especially with the holiday season approaching. Starting with a seasonal role can be a great step, and if you perform well, it might lead to a permanent position.

You've got this!

Hello Neveah,
I see that you are looking at making some money to save for college. Here is a good opportunity to also build some skills for your college application as well. So here are my suggestions:

What do you want to be in the future? If you are interested in the medical field, then look for jobs that are job adjacent. For example, you could ask the doctors, physical therapists, rehabilitation centers etc if they would like someone to help out. A niece of mine did this, she worked at a rehab center and was able to use it in her application. I used the medical field but accounting, almost any firm locally might be open for some help. It's good to find someone you know or speak to for these types of opportunities.

What are you good at, at school? There is always the option of tutoring at school, at the library. Someone I know taught music to young kids locally at her home. I know of others who tutored at school and the library which are all safe places.

You said you have social skills, build on them. As someone said, let people know you are available for odd jobs in your neighborhood or in on apps like next door. As you are 16, you might be able to drive. She used to take the kids from home to some of their activities for a mom who needed the help.

There is always the option of working at local retail places i.e., the local donut, burger places. the mall.

Since you are motivated, look at everything as an opportunity. Since you said you cannot get employed and I am not sure why, I would also suggest, offer to volunteer. For one that builds experience and allows you to use it for your next job application and they might just pay you if you work hard.

Good Luck!

Good Day Nevaeh!

Get to know your neighbors, just be friends with them, say good day, have a cup of tea with them. You can mention that you are a neighborhood volunteer or a cheap, reliable worker.

You might find yourself digging gardens, mowing lawns, washing cars and houses! Even better if you can get an internship with a local university.

Babysitter: A flexible job that allows you to earn money while caring for children.
Retail Sales Associate: Work in stores assisting customers and managing inventory.
Food Service Worker: Positions in restaurants or cafes, such as cashier or server.
Dog Walker/Pet Sitter: Take care of pets while their owners are away.
Lifeguard: Monitor pool areas and ensure the safety of swimmers.

These jobs provide great opportunities for earning money and gaining work experience. For more options, you can check out resources like Indeed or personal finance websites.

GOD BLESS!

Hi Nevaeh,

Great job on taking the initiative to plan and save for college! You're already doing fantastic, and you're going to achieve so much! With the holidays coming up, think about starting a gift-wrapping service in your area. You can check out department store gift-wrapping services to see their options, prices, and how long it takes. Look into the costs of supplies like wrapping paper, bows, and tape to set your prices. Consider how you'll spread the word, maybe by putting up flyers around your neighborhood or in mailboxes.

Building connections with your neighbors could also lead to more job opportunities after the holidays.

Wishing you lots of luck and success. You're doing an amazing job!
