What are the common hours seen as a chef ?
I am a student of Oak Harbor High school in Ohio and I was considering becoming a chef, so I'm trying to get some extra information before I make my decision.

Hi Gabriel,
Your work hours depend on the restaurant's opening time. At a breakfast place, you might start around 3-4 am, while at a lunch spot, you could begin at 7 am. Shifts can last from 8 to 14 hours a day, totaling about 50-60 hours a week.

The great part about being a chef is you really have the ability to pick a job that suits the hours you want to work. A lot of people assume being a chef means lots of nights, and in many settings that can be the case. Dinner is definitely the most popular meal period for people to dine out for, so many chef jobs have a PM focused schedule, which is great if you're a night owl. If you like early mornings bakeries and breakfast focused restaurants provide an early start to your day and leave the afternoons off. If you want a typical 9-5 schedule, school cafeterias, lunch focused restaurants, and food service associated with an office setting can provide that type of schedule. It really depends on what you're looking for!

The most common hours chefs, cooks, kitchen staff and anyone else in the business can be really long and rewarding. If you want easy hours you can find a job as a breakfast and lunch cook . Most places serve lunch and dinner which means late hours and fast pace if you find a well established place. working the dinner shifts mean more creativity and much better experience. I think the craziest hour are in the catering business . I have almost 35 years in it and hours are sometimes insane. There were times I worked two months straight without a day off but the money you can make is great. The hours can range form 10-18 hrs a day . You also get to work in some great places like I did in New York city because I worked for an off premise caterers. I also went to different states and countries for the catering companies. Catering is a great way to work lots of hours and be very create because you're not limited to one menu but create what the customers ask for. If you want to get ahead in this business you have to put the time in to learn all aspects of the field. Don't be afraid of working hours and learn as much as you can from everybody especially those you see that are creative and willing to teach you. Good luck and happy cooking.
