Can I pursue both Diagnostic Medical Sonography and Nursing or should I just stick to one?

Hi, I'm currently a senior in high school looking to pursue an associates in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. I also want to go to school for nursing. Is there anyway that my credits from the DMS program could transfer to a BS for Nursing or would I have to completely start over when it comes to nursing? Or should I just do nursing instead of DMS?

Hello, Natalia !

Both careers are great, but you'll have to choose one because they are both serious paths, working on human bodies and there's lots to learn for either.

Another reason why you'd need to focus on one is because they both have completely different work demands, time schedules and one needs to be dedicated and work in either for quite a long time to have any opportunity for advancement. Your credits received for Sonography do not "transfer" over to a nursing program because they don't teach sonography in Nursing and your Nursing program has specific requirements and sonography related courses are not them. I also advise to discuss this with your Academic Counselor as random information online may not be enough, but I can tell you that it's best to focus on one of these careers.

Do not ask others which career you should choose. That is totally up to you as you will spend a long time in your career so you have to choose the one that you love. I am sure that you will make the best choice for yourself.

Best wishes in all you do !

Hi, I would consider shadowing both professions or doing more research in both to see if there’s one you might enjoy more. I think sonography would be the easier/quicker route, but that doesn’t necessarily make it the better decision for you. A quick internet search tells me that sonographers can make more or about the same amount of money as nurses! Nursing school is not easy , i think it would be difficult/impossible to pursue both at the same time. Good luck to you!

You should pick one. You can research both to find out how much they are and how long for training in order to finish. Nursing is very involved and can only be taken alone in college. Ultrasound is much shorter to obtain certification. You have to decide which one you are interested in.

You definitely could pursue both, but not at the same time. An associate's degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography will be much easier to attain than a BS in Nursing, so you will have to prioritize which is more important or which you would want to do more.

Technically yes you can study both but there really aren't jobs that require both so you wouldn't need it for that. If you find both interesting you should do some more research and just stick to one. Unless you are planning on work 2 different jobs, hospitals that have both nurses and ultrasound techs don't really cross cover like that. Usually you are hired for the one job you are hired for.... IF you find both interesting then going down a nursing path into OB care where ultrasounds are performed are a good idea... but again they usually have techs do the acutal ultrasound.
