How will I figure out what to major in when I have no idea what I want to do in the future?

I am a high school senior who is getting nervous since everyone around me seems to know what they want to do in life. I enjoy the arts but don't think it would make a promising career.

Hi Lauren. You need to think about what you enjoy. You mentioned that you like the arts, and that's important. Your interests matter, even if you're unsure about turning art into a career. Liking the arts doesn't mean you must become a full-time artist. It might mean you enjoy creativity, design, storytelling, or expressing ideas visually. Those strengths can lead to many different fields like graphic design, marketing, media, communications, education, interior design, animation, or even business roles that involve creativity.

It also helps to think about what kind of work feels comfortable to you. Do you like working alone or with others? Do you enjoy talking, creating, organizing, or solving problems? These questions can give clues about what fields you might like. And remember, choosing a major is not the same as choosing a job you'll have forever. Many majors lead to many different careers, and many careers don't require a specific major at all.

Another helpful option is to explore different classes during your first year. Many students use this time to try out subjects they're curious about. This lets you discover what you enjoy before making a final decision. You can also talk to academic advisors, professors, and even older students to understand what different majors are really like. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thank you for your question. Many students have similar question. Different colleges have strength in different subjects. Firstly, you need to find out what careers you have interest. Then, you can research on the colleges good to relevant subjects.
Below are my suggestions:
1. Think about what you have interest, eg your hobbies, favourite subjects etc and identify the related careers
Eg if you have interest in maths, would you like to be an accountant, engineer, banker, financial analyst, maths teacher, etc
If you like music, would you like to be a musician, singer, musical artist, music composer, music producer, etc
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counselor, your parents, etc
4. Shortlist 1-3 careers you would like to pursue.
5. Do some colleges research on the relevant subjects and find out the entry criteria
Hope this helps! Good luck!
May Almighty God bless you!
