As a prospective nursing student, would I have the opportunity to pursue a minor in Creative Writing as well?

I am an aspiring Nursing major with long-term goals of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).
- Currently a high school senior who has taken pre-nursing classes through my high school (where I performed 25 successful phlebotomy sticks, implemented essential infection control and medical safety protocols, along with other clinical rotations).
- STAMP WS Global Seal of Biliteracy
- CCMA Certification
- I have worked with my local cultural learning center (helping immigrant families)
- Love writing during my free time and have helped in the translation of a book

Hi, Mariana. Some things to consider.

First off, a Nursing degree is pretty rigorous, especially regarding Pre-Requisite classes. You may have limited options for non-Nursing classes. Also, not all schools offer a CW minor, though they'll likely have an English minor with CW classes. This is something to discuss with your school advisor when considering which schools to apply to. The college's catalogue will also have this info.

That said, you don't need a minor to write, as long as you can take some classes. You can still likely squeeze in a few CW classes, even if not enough to make a "true" minor. You might also have opportunities to contribute to the school's literary mag or newspaper. Great experiences. If none of that works out, explore writing groups in your community or through platforms like MeetUp. You'll find other writers to help each other along.

My understanding is that Medical Schools look favorably on activities like this, especially if you think about the rising popularity of writing groups and journaling for in medical settings (for patients, new parents, etc.) as a way to help people adjust to new situations. So your creative interests may also help you advance in your medical field. Above all, if you love to write, just WRITE!
