Mechanical engineering at the University of Oklahoma sounds like a solid choice from what current and past students share, and it is encouraging that you are heading there as a senior. The program is well regarded, ranking in the top 100 for engineering schools, with strengths in hands on facilities like the Engineering Practice Facility where you can work on real projects. Pros include helpful professors, beautiful campus vibes especially in spring and fall, and opportunities for team study in modern buildings like Devon. Some mention the workload is challenging, but the career prospects are strong, with many grads landing good jobs. Cons could be the competitive nature, but overall, reviews highlight a supportive environment and ethical focus. If you enjoy building things, you will fit right in connect with alumni on LinkedIn for more personal stories. You are in for a rewarding experience.

William’s Answer

Hi Kevin,
Mechanical engineering is one of the traditional branches of engineering. It largely deals with the design, construction, operation and maintenance of machines. It also covers such areas as water treatment, structures, electrical machines and electronics.
It gives you a chance to work in the manufacturing sectors: aerospace, automotive, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, oil & gas, textiles, earthmoving equipment, other fast moving consumer goods; utilities, mining etc. It also provides pathways to such specialized areas as robotics.
Mechanical engineers teach in universities and colleges, work in research institutions etc.
Roles include, amongst others, design, production, utilities and maintenance engineers. Others work as sales engineers. The profession can be combined with others: personally, I am both a mechanical engineer and a brewer.
Additional training in leadership and management skills can allow you to take up senior roles at all levels of the organization.
To take full advantage of the opportunities offered by mechanical engineering, you need to excel both in your studies and in the field.

Chris’s Answer

The question is how serious you are about this major at this time. If you are seriously interested in an engineering career, ME is one of the better choices you have as an undergraduate. If you see yourself headed for a sales engineering job or an MBA type next step, it will allow you to absorb the general principles and ground you. But if you’re really interested in the subject matter, you want to prepare yourself for a deeper dive into one of the many areas an ME program provides - structures, control systems, robotics, machine design, stress analysis, etc. Realistically, consider an MS program as a likely next step in that case.
