Any Midwives out there?

For any midwives out there, how did you start your journey? I am going to graduate this semester with my AS Healthcare Science and transfer to a 4 year for my pre-nursing BSN. I am looking to become a midwife. I want to know what you guys journey looked like. Also, what was the hardest part? Was it the nursing classes or was it the certification program? #fall25

Thank you comment icon Hello Stefanyah! Your inquiries have gone through my weekly notice and from my international perspective and from what I have seen not experienced because I am not in medical field is that you need to work well under pressure and solve the problem quickly. Working in shift schedule is not easy mentally. I was a cashier in a hospital for a period of time. The world needs more people like you. May the blessing follow you always! Isida Mici

Hello, Stefanya !

I am not a Midwife, however, you need to be better informed about the academics and path towards the career you want.

I am sorry to say that an Associate Degree in Healthcare Science does not directly qualify you to become a registered nurse, as nursing requires a specific nursing degree focused on direct patient care and clinical training. You would have to go for a second Associate Degree or start a four year Nursing path for your Bachelors in Nursing. Midwives are nurses. The Bachelors in Nursing is NOT a "pre-nursing" path, it is a Nursing Program for your RN in Nursing. That is the usual path, however, the steps for being a Midwife in your state of New Jersey should be verified with your Academic Counselor as you might need to get a Masters Degree to practice Midwifery in New Jersey. All certified nurse midwife candidates in New Jersey must earn a masters or higher degree recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education.

When you get a qualifying degree, you then take and pass the National Certification Examination to be a Certified Midwife. Once certified, apply for Licensure as a Nurse Midwife through the New Jersey Board of Nursing.

So, your first step is to return to school and enroll in a Nursing Program. Since you want to be a Midwife, I suggest going for the four year Bachelors Degree which you will have to start from the beginning. You will get better experience going for the Bachelors Degree and a stronger foundation to go into Midwifery. After your Bachelors, in New Jersey, you'll have to go for your Masters Degree. Definitely visit an Academic Counselor at your college as well as the Nursing Department to verify this information. Do the path for Midwifery as told to you by the college counselor or nursing professor and do not do it without that guidance.

I sincerely hope you catch up soon and take the path that will lead to your dream career as a Midwife. Best wishes in all you do.
