How is nursing school going to apply to my future, will I finally follow my own dreams and become a NICU nurse ?
I am a sophomore in college, at Edgewood University in Madison, WI. It has always been my dream to become a NICU nurse, but I always have something holding me back.

It will take some experience in generalized nursing to learn your skill. Maybe start in peds or labor and delivery, both will make the transition that much easier to go into the nicu. Get some good exposure with critical care such as learning eggs, vents, and the
Monitoring equipment. But nicu is very achievable. Go for it!

Hi Brityn. I am a Registered Nurse for over 20 years now. I did not intend to enter nursing school, but my freshman year I discovered the great program at the university I was already attending. I had always wanted to work with children, so I thought I could become a pediatric nurse. I have done many forms of nursing including home health, private pediatric nurse in the home; in the hospital I have worked ICU, Medical-Surgical, charge nurse duties. I did not become the pediatric nurse I originally wanted to be but found many venues that helped people and helped me to grow professionally and personally. I would say if nursing school & dreams of becoming a NICU nurse are your dream, then yes, pursue it. While in nursing school, you will experience all the current fields that nursing has to offer. So, I say keep yourself open to all the options and challenges out there. NICU is a worthwhile profession, and we could always use great nurses with compassion for babies. But keep an open mind during nursing school and enjoy the experience. I'm not sure what is holding you back: fear, financial, family obligations? But it helps to do a pro/con list to determine if something is worth your time & effort to pursue. If you keep being "held back", then nothing is accomplished, you become stagnant. I encourage you to pursue your dream; we can use some good nurses!
