Generative AI is perhaps the most transformational technology since the advent of the internet. It will impact every facet of our lives and will require adaptation in many industries for employees to maximize their skills. An understanding of the underpinning of software and hardware engineering will continue to be a critical foundational skill as there will be a significant oversight component to all of the evolution of GenAI.
It is also very apparent that being able to ask the right questions of the platforms is a critical skills. Prompt engineering will only increase in value and potentially creates new career trajectories based on the foundational skills already highlighted. Understanding and verifying the outputs of AI requires a much higher level of scrutiny that will benefit those who truly understand their areas of expertise.

You should build strong foundations in both hardware and software, supported by solid mathematics, algorithms, AI-related concepts, and Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA). Do not fear AI; it cannot replace human judgment, contextual understanding, accuracy oversight, or nuanced decision-making, but instead enhances your capabilities by automating tasks efficiently. Staying updated with industry trends already places you on a strong path toward major career opportunities. Hands-on experience is essential, so build projects and showcase your work through GitHub and a strong portfolio, join hackathons, contribute to open-source, and gain early exposure through internships or volunteering, while networking with professionals via LinkedIn, Stack Exchange, and GitHub, and seeking mentorship. At the same time, develop essential soft skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability.
The most highly recommended specialization for a computer engineering major in an AI-driven future is embedded systems with AI integration, followed by robotics and autonomous systems, and cybersecurity with a focus on hardware and embedded security, as these fields combine engineering depth with AI capabilities and will remain in high demand. Computer engineering itself will continue to be highly sought after, and those who also develop AI expertise will be even more in demand. By staying committed to continuous learning, innovation, and building practical projects, you will secure strong, future-proof career opportunities in the coming years.

That is an excellent, forward-looking question to ask as a first-year student. It shows great strategic thinking.
The short answer is: Computer Engineering will have one of the strongest and most resilient job markets in the future, because of AI, not despite it

This is my take, AI and automation continue to advance; and the go to market of the product will accelerate within months.
AI systems rely heavily on specialized hardware and software architecture which required the expertise of computer engineers.
The vision and mission of the computer engineers will vary over the time, you will see the improved version of today's roles and responsibilities of Software engineers.
ex: cybersecurity concerns will become more significant. Computer engineers with expertise in hardware and software security will be in high demand to design secure systems and mitigate potential vulnerabilities. you need to design, develop, and maintain a system with AI to protect.
Consider AI as an assistant where it help you to accelerate the work and you use your engineering skills to build more innovative and robust system that help to accelerate manufacturing, healthcare, consumer electronics etc .
