What is the best way to stand out when trying to gain job experience if nobody wants to hire you since you lack experience?

Essentially, what is the best way to get your foot in the door?

Hi Riccia. You need to focus on what you can offer. Even if you haven't had a paid job before, you probably have skills from school, volunteering, clubs, or personal projects. Skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and being responsible are very valuable to employers. On your resume and in interviews, you can show examples of these skills. For example, leading a school project, helping organize an event, or volunteering in your community shows that you can take initiative and get things done, even without formal work experience.

Networking is another way to get noticed. Many jobs are found through people you know rather than job postings. You can talk to family, friends, teachers, or mentors about your goals. Ask if they know of any opportunities or can introduce you to someone who does. You can also attend career fairs, workshops, or school events to meet potential employers. When someone recommends you, it helps employers see your potential, even if you don't have experience yet.

Internships, volunteering, or unpaid work are also great ways to start building experience. While it may feel discouraging to work without pay, these opportunities help you learn skills, make connections, and create references for future jobs. Even short experiences can lead to paid positions later because employers see that you are reliable and motivated.

Hi Riccia — First of all, you are not alone. Every person who goes for their first job or a new one (new role, new industry) experiences this. question at some level. So I recommend you start by acknowledging what it brings up for you. Then let it go and get yourself ready!

The most important thing you can do — in any interview — is get clear on why you are the best person for the role. Ask yourself and work through answers to questions such as:

- What makes you the best person for the role? (Think about your related knowledge, skills, experience, and be prepared to speak to them clearly and succinctly.)
- Why does this role interest you? (Think specifically about that role at that company; and try to go one step beyond what you think others might say; get super specific.)
- How would you get up to speed? (Have a plan! A 30-60-90 day one is a great structure.)

Lastly, never underestimate the value of:
- Structured answers (Use the STAR method)
- Passion, excitement, a willingness to CRUSH the role! Exude it.

I hope that helps! You got this!
