Working in healthcare can look like many different things. You can be with patients all day or you could never see patients. You could work in a large hospital or you can work in a small clinic. You might be able to even work from home. The point is that it is okay to be unsure. But remember, healthcare does not just look like one thing - and thats the beauty of it!

I’m not a nurse but I work right along side them. My suggestion for your dilemma would be to see if you can get some shadow hours in your off time to explore the nursing career. I would also suggest looking at the different specialties available for an RN then looking up a YouTube video on that type of nursing. The field has a lot of different opportunities so if you find you don’t like one kind there is most assuredly another option.

If you have a passion for helping people this is a good career path. It's an important tenant as it not always easy and there is times of burnout. But if helping people fuels your fire than it is worth it.

James’s Answer

Nursing can be the goal, or an excellent start to move in many directions within healthcare. I know nurses who became physicians, nurse practitioners, hospital administrators, air and ground ambulance nurses... Nursing in a clinic is very different from an inpatient unit is very different from an operating room...
So, I would suggest you try to explore the many possibilities available to you. Direct observation is best, when you can do that. You have excellent hospitals in Richmond, so be bold and ask how you might observe and discuss options with those in various branches of nursing.

Michele’s Answer

I remember being in college a while back and it feels like you should have it all figured out. Give yourself some grace. It is good to ask the questions and research options and consider how you feel about healthcare. I am not a clinician but I still work in healthcare and I know that the work I do supports each patient. There are many avenues in healthcare that do not involve direct patient care and you may want to consider those too. Look into revenue cycle, coding and billing, and compliance. Some good resources for that are at AAPC and AHIMA.

I agree with the other person who recommends shadowing as well in other areas. Reach out to your contacts and talk with them too.

Good luck
