Hi Blake,
Congratulations on making it to your senior year — such an exciting milestone! As a parent of a Sun Devil, I’ve found that scholarships (and grants) are definitely the way to go. My son, who just started his freshman year, was awarded both the New American University Scholarship and the ASU Living and Learning Award for this academic year.
I thought the following information might be helpful. It comes courtesy of Copilot, a tool we’re encouraged to use at work…
🎓 Key Scholarships for Arizona Residents
- Arizona Promise Program
- Covers all tuition and fees at Arizona’s public universities for qualifying low‑income Arizona residents.
- Eligibility: Arizona residency, high school graduate, GPA ≥ 2.5, and FAFSA submission by April 1.
- Does not cover housing, meal plans, or books.
- ASU Advantage Program
- Includes the Obama Scholars Program, College Attainment Grant, and Arizona Promise Award.
- Designed to make tuition‑free attendance possible for Arizona residents with financial need.
- Obama Scholars also receive housing and meal plan coverage for the first year.
- New American University Scholarship
- Merit‑based award for incoming first‑year students.
- Amount varies depending on GPA, test scores, and residency.
- Renewable for up to 4 years if academic requirements are maintained.
- Phoenix Opportunity Award
- Supports first‑generation, low‑income students from Arizona.
- Available through ASU’s Scholarship Universe and external platforms like Bold.org.
📌 How to Apply
- Scholarship Universe: ASU’s portal that matches students with both ASU and external scholarships.
- FAFSA: Critical for need‑based programs like the Arizona Promise Program and Obama Scholars.
- Deadlines: Most Arizona resident scholarships require early application (FAFSA by April 1, scholarship applications by fall deadlines).
⚖️ Bottom Line
If you’re an Arizona resident, ASU offers multiple pathways to reduce or even eliminate tuition costs. The Arizona Promise Program and ASU Advantage Program are the most impactful for need‑based aid, while the New American University Scholarship rewards academic achievement.
