I am a Japanese and business major with a minor in international politics, but I'm not sure what to do as a career.

Hi Anaya,

Many big companies operate internationally. A degree in business combined with knowledge of language and culture of Japan, would beautifully set you up for a career in a company with offices in Japan or doing business with Japan.

Your minor in international politics could also open doors into international relations, trade policy, or diplomacy.

Nobody can tell you what YOU would prefer. If you are still in college, you can take your time to explore different roles, e.g. through internships. Likely, there is more than one path that you would enjoy. Sometimes you make the career decisions and sometimes the career decisions are made for you because a role you wanted is not available or an opportunity you didn't even think about suddenly becomes available.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Hi Anaya. Combining Japanese with business major gives you many career options, especially in international work. Knowing Japanese language and culture makes you valuable to companies that work with Japan or Japanese clients. One common path is working in international business for companies that have offices in Japan. This could include jobs in marketing, sales, finance, or management. Your Japanese skills help you communicate better, understand business customs, and build good relationships with Japanese colleagues and clients.

Another option is working in trade, import/export, or supply chain management between Japan and your country. Companies that sell Japanese products or buy goods from Japan often want employees who understand the language and culture. You can help with communication, contracts, and solving problems that come up when working with Japanese partners. Your skills make business easier and help avoid mistakes caused by cultural differences.

Your minor in international politics also opens more doors. You could work in consulting or international relations. For example, consulting companies often need people who understand both business and international issues, and your Japanese knowledge can make you a key member of projects involving Japan.
