What field trips to have for my health care club?
So I'm in a club for future healthcare workers, and I don't know where to plan the trip to. Are there any good places to travel to near Houston/Beaumont healthcare-related?

Hi Maria,
Find out if a local hospital or clinic would be able to host you. They could give you an overview of a wide variety of professions in healthcare. Ideal would be a teaching hospital where you could also talk to students in clinical training.
Another option would be a healthcare department at a university. Depending on your interests, you could visit a medical school, dental school, nursing school, pharmacy school and/or a school that trains a variety of Allied Health professions. Aim for variety if your group is interested in a range of different professions.
I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Depending on the interests of your members how about a local hospital? The facility’s community relations department (or they can refer you to the proper department) may be willing to arrange for your group to be addressed by various department leaders and, as we did at my former facility, may also bring along a new employee. The young department member will be able to address questions from a beginner perspective and may offer a sense of peer connection. A physical tour of the hospital may or may not be possible but if you and your group are interested, ask. Good luck and thank you for your interest in healthcare.

I like the idea of taking your club to a local health fair! You could also contact a local food bank to volunteer (food is medicine!) or a community health clinic or resource center in the Houston area.

Hi Maria! That’s a great idea for a healthcare club—field trips can be incredibly motivating and eye-opening for students.
If you’re near Houston or Beaumont, you have excellent healthcare-related options to explore:
Hospitals & Medical Centers
-Texas Medical Center (Houston) – It’s the largest medical complex in the world and includes institutions like MD Anderson, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Baylor College of Medicine. Many offer student tours or virtual programs.
-CHI St. Luke’s Health or Houston Methodist – Great exposure to different healthcare careers (nursing, imaging, administration, mental health, etc.).
Specialty & Community Care
-Rehabilitation centers or mental health facilities (if available for tours) to show students careers beyond traditional hospital roles.
-Community health clinics or public health departments, which are excellent for learning about preventive care and serving underserved populations.
Education & Simulation
-Nursing or allied health programs at local colleges or universities that have simulation labs. These visits are very popular and hands-on.
-EMS or fire departments (with medical response units) to explore emergency healthcare careers.
Research & Careers Exposure
-Biomedical research labs or health science museums (when available) to spark interest in research-based careers.
-Guest talks or combined trips with healthcare professionals if in-person tours aren’t possible.
I’d recommend choosing trips that show a variety of roles—not just doctors and nurses, but also mental health professionals, technicians, researchers, and administrators. This helps students see how many paths exist in healthcare.
You’re doing something impactful for future healthcare workers—good luck planning the trip!

Hello, Maria !
If you are looking for opportunities for your Health Club, I would say there are some, but not exactly defined as "field trips". You may want to have you and your club members experience active participation as a group or individually.
The Beaumont Teen Health Centers offer programs designed to help young people make healthy choices and provide opportunities for teens to engage in meaningful health related activities. The Baptist Hospital Auxiliary in Beaumont supports teen involvement through its volunteer programs, which includes opportunities for high school students to contribute to healthcare operations and participate in community service. The Junior Volunteer program at Texas Health Resources, while not specific to Beaumont, offers a model for high school students to gain experience in healthcare settings, with similar programs likely available locally. Look into this program and see if creating a Beaumont Chapter might be a valuable project for your group to do.
There's another opportunity for your group to engage in volunteer work at Southeast Texas Hospice which I also wanted to mention. This however would be meeting people at the end of life which could be sad or difficult, but you can determine if your group is ready to do this sort of project volunteer work.
Now, as for a field trip, a good field trip would be to go as a group to the Old Red Medical Museum at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, which is approximately 70 miles southwest of Beaumont. You can arrange transportation by arranging some of the parents driving or going by bus. For a further trip, like 200 miles away, you could consider going to Texas Medical Association History of Medicine Gallery in Austin. But In Houston, which is about100 miles northeast of Beaumont, The Health Museum is an interactive science center focused on the human body and medical science, offering exhibits like the DeBakey Cell Lab and the Amazing Body Pavilion. These outings would be considered "field trips". See if you can get to any of them by bus or train.
Remember that doing projects and volunteer work are very beneficial and enlightening and taking a trip to one or more of the Medical Museums would be a Field Trip. Wishing you and your club all the best !
