If you plan to stay in your present location you need you need to dentify opportunities nearby. Garden centers, greenhouse, nurseries and farms. What skills do you have? Have you worked in horticulture to get an idea? You can also interview people working in horticulture. Most horticulture almost always requires physical stamina in the beginning. Hi Jacob,
Great that you’re interested in horticulture! Since you’re a senior, here are some practical steps and recommended classes you can take now to help you get started:
1. Relevant High School Classes
Biology: Understanding basic plant and animal biology is key for horticulture.
Agriculture or Horticulture Classes: If your school offers any courses specifically in horticulture, plant science, or general agriculture, definitely take those.
Environmental Science: This can give you insights into ecosystems and sustainable practices, which are important in horticulture.
Chemistry: Basic chemistry knowledge helps with understanding soils, fertilizers, and plant nutrition.
Botany (if available): A class focused on plants would be very beneficial.
2. Extracurricular & Practical Experience
Join an Agriculture Club or FFA (Future Farmers of America) if available.
Volunteer or get a part-time job/internship at a local nursery, greenhouse, botanical garden, or farm.
Start a small garden project at home or school to gain hands-on experience.
3. Post-High School Planning
Consider college programs in horticulture, plant science, agriculture, landscape design, or environmental science.
Look into community college programs or local extension services that may offer short courses or certifications in horticulture.
Summary:
To get into horticulture as a senior, focus on biology, any available agriculture/horticulture classes, and environmental science if possible. Gain practical experience through clubs or internships this year to build your skills and explore your interests.
If you want, I can also help you find local programs or summer internships!
