Where do I go to get a degree in fashion marketing?
I am deciding between Seoul, Tokyo, Paris, New York, London, and Shanghai. All of them have their own pros and cons (in my opinion), but I would like to know more about how strong the schools' fashion marketing programs are. Do they have strong internship and networking opportunities? Are the schools any good and/or well-known in the fashion industry? What about the city's atmosphere in general? Would I be able to express myself freely in the particular city? These are just some things I am wondering.

Hi Haruka,
When I began my college journey at Michigan State University, I aimed to work in Fashion. Although MSU didn't offer a Fashion major, I focused on internships and clubs related to Fashion. I worked with a local magazine and joined groups with like-minded students, like our university's fashion publication. My major was Communications with a minor in Public Relations, but my path took an unexpected turn. While working in fashion, I got to support events from charitable fashion shows to large corporate gatherings like summer picnics and 5K runs. These experiences helped me see that my skills fit well in the corporate world and event planning. I also got to be creative with event themes, decor, and entertainment each year. So, my advice is to say "YES" to opportunities beyond your classes and major. As I explored the fashion world, I found that many people in the industry came from different backgrounds, even with majors in Business or Math. Follow what excites you and keep an open mind as you find your career path.

A career in fashion marketing can be really exciting! It's a field with many different aspects to explore.
If you're thinking about school, it's good to know that many colleges and universities focus on fashion design, development, and production. If you're considering studying outside the US, keep in mind that some countries have strict rules about what you can wear.
Although I don't have a degree in marketing or fashion, I have spent years working in retail, specifically in visual merchandising and HR. Visual merchandising is a key part of fashion marketing. In my job, I traveled to different stores to update merchandise, create window displays, open new stores, place orders, and even design some clothing items. Visual merchandising includes everything from window banners to aisle displays and color coordination of clothes with signs.
Traveling and studying in another country sounds exciting, but remember that some places have specific dress codes you need to follow.

Hello Haruka,
I have had friends work in the fashion/retail industry and the following schools have come up often: Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and Parsons School of Design in NYC.
The great thing about attending school in NYC is a lot of internships, job, and fashion events are here in NYC (e.g. NY Fashion week). Also, schools like FIT have deep fashion industry connections and opportunities that they can provide to their students. I know someone that got to spend a semester abroad in Europe with a major fashion house in connection with her program at FIT.

In my research, schools in Seoul and Shanghai do not show up in lists of global leaders in fashion marketing. Tokyo, Paris, New York, and London do show up. Also schools in Milan, Italy typically are included (see link below). These specific schools appear a lot - the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and Parsons School of Design in NYC, along with the London College of Fashion (LCF).
But you also ask about their home cities. This makes sense to me because you will live and potentially find internships there for four years. You may end of up staying longer for work. I am not sure I know exactly what you mean by "express yourself freely" but if you mean dress as you like, I think New York would be the best, but I advise you to narrow down your school choices and then visit them. This is great for demonstrating your sincere interest, learning more about the school, and checking out the vibes of the city.
