Jeffrey’s Answer

There are many different jobs in the field. Some work with foster care and adoption, others in the criminal justice system, while others work with persons on public assistance, or within the mental health system, still others provide therapy in the public or nonprofit sectors or in private therapy. The latter typically requires a professional license which involves graduate degree and supervised practice.

Jeffrey recommends the following next steps:

Find someone in the field and interview them.
Volunteer to work in a setting where social workers are employed.

Hi Rachel, I’m so happy to see your question and the answer you’ve already received:) As well I’m always pleased to see people interested in pursuing a career in the Social Work Profession .
There are many different jobs you can have as a social worker & much of what you’ll want to be exploring will be how far you seek to earn an academic degree in the field. Job titles & description may include outreach / community worker, vocational coordinator, Department of Social Services, Family & Child Abuse prevention workers, Social Work assistant, Hospital/ Medical Skilled Nursing home Facility Social Worker, Youth Counselor , Alcohol & subStance Abuse Counseling / rehabilitation & recovery counselor & so very many more will be listed in your job searches.
Undergraduate/ bachelor’s degree will likely be required for many positions, yet many entry level & even Associate degree programs have internships to and will provide in the job training that is specialized to the population being served. As suggested previously you’ll want to seek volunteer positions in areas of interest as well .
As an LCSW ( Licensed Certified Social Worker) I have worked primarily in the private sector as a psychotherapist practitioner yet have enjoyed working as a disaster recovery consultant , Group counseling consultant for Non profit organizations , school social worker and adjunct faculty in a 2nd year Graduate School program. There’s a myraid of specialty areas of interest to be studied with a Master’s degree.
I hope this is helpful and will take pleasure in hearing what you’re learning about in your pursuit:) Best of positive regards, thanks for your question and sharing it Rachel!
