Rafael’s Answer

Hey Kaswar! Great question and it's simpler than it sounds. Business is basically the activity of providing products or services that people need or want in exchange for money or value. It can be as small as selling homemade cookies to your neighbors or as big as a global company shipping products around the world. At its core, every business involves figuring out a problem people have, creating a solution, and delivering it in a way that works for both you and the customer. Within business there are tons of areas you can explore like marketing, finance, operations, sales, and strategy, so there's really something for everyone no matter what your interests are. If you're curious about it, I'd say start by paying attention to the businesses around you and ask yourself why they exist, who they serve, and how they make money. That simple habit will teach you more than you'd expect!

Bob’s Answer

Business is simply providing a physical or virtual product and/or service in exchange for receiving real or perceived value such as an equal trade of a product or service or an appropriate amount of money.
Rafael is correct that the essence of business is to identify a problem, creating a solution and delivering it in a way that works for you and your customer.
Identifying the problem is key. It may be readily apparent, but in many cases is not perceived by potential customers. An example is the personal mobile cell phone. The product did not exist, nor were potential customers demanding one. For example, a few people sat down and removed various products from their briefcases ( calendar, appointment book, calculator, pager, brochures, photos, air line tickets, files, etcetera). A review of available and expected technology was completed. Then, a brain session took place to see what future product and software might include all of these items. An imaginary product was specified and designers drew a pictrure of a product for the future. The team then visted with companies that could provide the technology and software for such a product. The rest is history. Customers had not demanded a product to solve a known problem. The team anticipated a problem need and projected what might solve it. Having led that team and partnered with other technology firms, a new product, new services and a new industry arrived. So, be creative, be innovative, seek out perceived problems not just those that are obvious and being serviced by others.

Bob recommends the following next steps:

There are products, like those with a pack of cards, that address different ways for you to think about problems-to make you more creative.
See if you can anticipate new problems not being addressed. How could you make it better?
