Hi Khushbu,

This is a very practical and important question, especially if you’re thinking long-term. Yes, psychology in the teaching profession (lecturer/professor roles) does have scope in India from 2026 and beyond, but it’s important to understand how the pathway works and what to expect.

The field of psychology is expanding in India. The demand from students is growing, more colleges are offering psychology studies, and mental health awareness is growing. It means that there will always be a demand for professors and lecturers who are qualified. But these positions are equally competitive, particularly in top government universities.

To become a lecturer or professor in India, the typical path is:
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology
- Master’s degree (very important)
- Qualify exams like UGC-NET (this is key for lecturer roles)
- For higher positions (like professor), a PhD is usually required

In terms of salary, it varies:
- Entry-level lecturers (especially in private colleges) may earn a moderate salary
- Government colleges and central universities usually offer better pay and stability
- With experience, promotions, and a PhD, salaries increase significantly

There are openings, but they are not always regular and can be competitive. Although private universities may often employ more and occasionally give lower initial salaries, government posts may take longer to open.

Building a solid academic profile, good grades, research experience, publications (if possible), and early UGC-NET clearance is good if you follow this path. You'll have a big advantage because of that.

Also, many people combine teaching with other work like research, counseling, or consulting, which can increase both income and career flexibility.

So, there is room for growth, but achieving success in this road requires preparation, patience, and intellectual strength.
Over time, this can be a highly fulfilling and secure job if you enjoy teaching, conducting research, and mentoring students.

Best wishes!

Hello Khushbu! Your inquiry has gone through my weekly mail. You are like a mentor for me and connections matter as much as skills. Reach out to career village as frequently as possible for your career path if you’re curious about. Unfortunately, I will give you a shallow answer like the song of Lady Gaga and Bradly Coopper :-) because my expertise is in Finance. Confidence isn’t something you’re born with—it’s built by trying, failing, and trying again. Every time you step outside your comfort zone, you grow. Absolutely I would suggest taking some classes in psychology like free online courses, volunteering, or even small side projects can give you valuable experience. Coaching is very interesting career path.
I am thinking for myself doing it for my field of expertise. Hope it helps.
May the blessing follow you always!
