How wanted or in demand are concept designers?

I think this is the job I want to do after college and I want to know if it is one that even has current open opportunities. I would mainly focus on characters, but could do other things as well.

Hi Myrrah,

First of all, I wish you the very best of luck as you think about your future — it’s great that you already have a role in mind.

If this is a position you’re seriously interested in, one of the most valuable things you can do is look on platforms like LinkedIn for people who are already working as concept designers and reach out to them. Not everyone will respond, but those who do can give you real insight into their background, career path, and what the role actually looks like day to day.

It’s also important to know that there isn’t always a single, clearly defined career path for roles like this. Strong fundamentals in design are essential, and staying aware of current trends — including AI and how it’s being used in creative industries — is becoming increasingly important.
At the end of the day, having a strong concept or idea is incredibly valuable. Your mission as a concept designer will be learning how to bring those ideas to life in ways that are compelling, adaptable, and useful to a team or project.

Stay curious, keep practicing, and don’t be afraid to learn from people already in the field — that combination will take you far.

Andrew’s Answer

Hi Myrrah,

Something to look into is a college or design school that has a Multimedia program. This program can offer you multiple aspects of design to learn and not just focus on one. With artificial intelligence being a thing now, I assume that it will get more sophisticated as we continue forward. I graduated from College in 2005. I graduated with a degree in Multimedia Production and Design. I wanted to be an Illustrator but when I graduated, employers wanted designers with Photoshop experience. I had to relearn so many things when I graduated because I focused so much on Illustration. However, because I did pay attention, I did at least have a solid foundation to build on after graduation.

What I'm saying is, what we like doing may not exactly be what employers and clients want or need. It helps to be as well-rounded as you can be.

Journey onward,
Drew
