How can I avoid getting stuck in a corporate setting and work for myself early on? #Spring26

I plan on majoring in business management and dream of one day owning my own business. I don't want to be stuck in a corporate ladder where it may seem impossible to get out of thus not allowing me to pursue my dream.

Antoni’s Answer

Don't be scared to take risks, but always have a backup plan. Begin with a small project on the side, and make sure you enjoy it, not just for the money, to avoid burnout.

Stay open to various opportunities. It's better to avoid big companies at first because their fast pace might hinder your growth. Instead, consider working with startups where you can manage projects from start to finish. Don't hesitate to try something new. Take the leap and see where it leads you.

Honestly you need to work for someone else to build experience before you work for yourself. It would be very tricky to work for yourself early in your career unless you have a very marketable skill which others don't have.

Be willing to walk away from jobs. Some jobs you will work will meet your needs and that is great! Some jobs will constantly require you to give them more attention than they are worth. Be willing to walk away from jobs that require more than they are worth.

Keep focus on what you are doing. You don't need to be a fortune 500 business right away. In fact your business might only be at a hobby level for a while before you do only have that as a full time job.

Learn from where you are working and try to understand how different businesses operate. You might figure out what you like in a corporate environment and strive to work there as well. Just don't settle for your next job.

Salsabil’s Answer

I used to be a teacher and never thought I’d work in the corporate world, let alone stay for over six years. From my experience, corporate life doesn't have to feel like a trap if you don't let it. I've learned a lot here, like how businesses operate, how teams collaborate, and how decisions are made.

It's important to stay focused and not just drift along. Keep building skills that can help you pursue your own goals one day, and always be curious about opportunities outside your current job. If you can, start something small on the side. You don't need a perfect plan; just begin little by little through networking and gaining the knowledge you need.
