While there may not be paid apprenticeships in speech/language pathology for freshmen, there are still many ways to get involved and learn. As you progress to your senior year and graduate school, you will have unpaid internship opportunities. Meanwhile, try reaching out to speech/language pathologists in various settings to observe their work. This will help you understand how therapy is applied across different ages and environments. Volunteering with organizations that support people with speech/language disorders, like schools, Special Olympics, clinics, or hospitals, can also be beneficial. For earning some money, consider working as a camp counselor at summer camps for kids with communication disorders. You might also find flexible jobs in places where speech therapy takes place.
