What makes a good story?
I'm a high schooler, and I am currently trying to write a story. I would like to know from people with experience what makes a good story. I know that the question can depend on many things, like genre, but I would like to know what keeps people interested. Is it character writing? World-building? Writing style? Please let me know.

You need to read first. Then write. And when you do decide to write, whatever you come up with, do not throw it away. And do not wait for inspiration. The key to a good story is to tell it.

A good story doesn't just look like a ticker of events (this happened then this happened then this happened). They should have forward momentum that moves and feels more like "this happened *and so this happened in response to that* and then this happened in response to that happening". It should feel like dominos and not like a retelling of a timeline.
One piece of advice I received I still use today is to keep my writing active. Either things are happening to push the story forward or the language is active (replacing to be verbs with active verbs - things like that).

Storytelling is personal, and there's no single right way to do it. The important thing is to be genuine—don't pretend to be someone else. Make sure you understand your topic and do thorough research.

Start by choosing a topic that excites you. It can be anything you like. Once you have your topic, dive into research to learn all you can. Sometimes this takes a few days, but it's worth it. Good writers always do their homework. As you create characters and plot, add lots of details. Describe each scene vividly so your readers stay hooked. When you finish writing, go back and proofread carefully. It can also be helpful to have someone else review it. If you're passionate and dedicated, a publisher is sure to notice your talent.

What do you truly love? What fires up your passion? It could be anything - food, music, golf, children's stories, scuba diving, or fitness. Think about what excites you and write a story around it. Since you know and love this topic, it should come naturally. Maybe you have a memorable experience that touched you and your family or friends.
Create characters inspired by people you know and imagine how they fit into your story. Consider how they interact with each other. Your goal is to connect with readers emotionally. What will draw them in and keep them interested? Is there a surprising or powerful moment that makes the story memorable?
Once you have an outline, practice telling it to yourself and then share it with a friend or family member. Listen to their feedback and use it to improve your story and characters. Finally, write it down, ensuring each character stays true to who they are.
