What advice would you give an aspiring attorney in choosing what college to attend for my undergraduate studies? Should I choose the highest ranked university whether or not it is my first choice, or should I go to a school where I feel like I will thrive and be happy even if the school is not as prestigious as some of the other schools where I have been accepted? Thank you. #Spring26 ?

I am a high school senior trying to decide where to attend college. I hope to eventually attend law school and become a lawyer.

Hi, Madden, and congratulations on your college admissions!
You set up the choice as higher-ranked college versus one where you could thrive and be happy. You did not differentiate between being less comfortable or uncomfortable at the higher-ranked school. If you are uncomfortable at the higher-ranked school, don't go there.
Go to the college where you will fit in. If you are happier, you will likely do better in your academics and be more active outside of class which will create a stronger record for law school applications.
What if you are comfortable but not as comfortable? For example, if financial aid is significantly higher at the higher-ranked school, and you cannot negotiate more aid at the other school, maybe go to the higher-ranked school. Or if the higher-ranked school has better internship opportunities or a major better suited to your interests, maybe go there.
It may be worth visiting both campuses (again?) if possible to firm up your impressions. Wishing you good luck!

Hi Madden: I agree with Martha - go to the school where you will fit in and be happy. College is a great experience. It is a time in life you should cherish and enjoy. I have practiced law for over 40 years, No one has ever asked me where I went to school or if I enjoyed it! I use to work with this one guy who went to Harvard. He was a terrible lawyer. While the institution is important - the person is more important. Just be yourself. Go where you will fit in an enjoy!
Good luck!
