Looking back on your career, what do you wish you had started doing earlier in college to prepare for this kind of path?

I'm a freshman studying Strategic Design and Management at Parsons and hope to work in branding, creative strategy, or innovation leadership after college. Looking back on your career, what do you wish you had started doing earlier in college to prepare for this kind of path? Thank you so much for your advise!

Soft skills as mentioned by Montse and starting with an internship early help you learn from real-world experiences. When you enter the corporate world, you'll see how valuable it is to gain experience and learn from those who are more experienced.

Montse’s Answer

Hi Marissa, I picked up a lot of hard skills in college, but I didn't really get trained in soft skills. Important things like public speaking and giving presentations were something I had to figure out once I began working. I think it would have been helpful to start learning those earlier in college.

Traveling and joining a school exchange program can be an amazing experience. In college, you have lots of time and freedom to explore new places and learn about different cultures. This can really help you grow and shape your values. Don't worry too much about the cost; the real challenge is finding time once you start working.

Ina’s Answer

Spend more time networking and take advantage of resources that your school has such as the career development centers or similar entities that can help you build a network.

Study abroad, learn other languages, take some fun classes that allow you to grow intellectually.
