How can I find finance summer internships in my area?
I will be starting school this summer at Purdue University majoring in finance. I have heard that I will need to begin looking for a summer internship for 2027 almost immediately. How can I get started? Is finding one near my home feasible or should I be prepared to work in another city or state?

Hi Amelia,
I hope all is well! This is a great question! The best way to find summer internships is to start early because many finance firms recruit months in advance. Definitely use your campus resources, Handshake, LinkedIn, and company career pages to search and apply but don’t rely only on job postings. Networking is just as important, so reach out to alumni, attend career fairs, and connect with people working in roles you are interested in.
You can definitely find internships near your home and some roles may even be remote. Some other competitive opportunities may be in other cities such as Chicago or New York so being open to other cities can expand your options. The key is to start building your resume early, apply consistently, and network actively so you can maximize your opportunities.
I hope this helps you on your journey and please reach out with any additional questions. Hope to talk soon!
Thank you,
Dwight

Great question - internships are offered by all types of organization and I would recommend being open minded to some extent with where you intern since each opportunity will provide you will some experience and networking.
It sounds like you want to focus on finance - I would start with financial institutions in your area, but then broaden that to adjacent industries. For example, interning with a consulting firm that focuses on financial services may afford you the opportunity to spend time at multiple FS institutions during your time and gain a broader industry perspective.
The application process for the following summer usually start late summer/ early fall of the prior year. Go broad and you will land an opportunity with persistence. Also, if you have a network of family and friends don't be afraid to leverage them!
Best of luck

Amelia, you have a great chance of finding an internship close to home or even in another city or state. It all depends on what interests you and which companies offer programs. In finance, many big banks and investment firms have offices all over the U.S., and there are plenty of opportunities in NYC if you want to stay in New Jersey for the summer.
I suggest reaching out to the Purdue career center. They have finance clubs where you can meet other students and professionals. Networking is a fantastic way to open doors to interviews. Plus, during the interview process, you might be able to choose from different work locations.
