For someone trying to break into finance with limited experience, what specific steps or habits helped you stand out early in your career? #Spring26
I am currently an undergraduate student interested in pursuing a career in finance, particularly in areas like wealth management or real estate. I have some basic knowledge of finance concepts, but I am still building my technical skills and practical experience. This summer, I will be completing an internship, and I am actively trying to prepare myself to make the most out of it.
I am especially interested in understanding what I can do now—whether it’s specific skills to develop, habits to build, or ways to network effectively—that would help me differentiate myself from other students who may have more experience. I would really appreciate any advice based on your own early career experiences.

I hope all is well! This is a great question! For someone trying to break into finance with limited experience, the biggest thing that helps you stand out is taking initiative early. This means building basic technical skills, getting involved in finance or business clubs, and finding any experience whether it’s a small internship or course project. Showing that you have gone beyond just coursework signals real interest and effort to employers.
Another key step is networking and being consistent with it. Reaching out to alumni, attending events, and having conversations with people in the field can open doors that applications alone won’t. At the same time, being able to clearly tell your story of why finance, what you have done so far, and what you are working toward can make a big difference in interviews. It is usually not one big thing that stands out but a combination of small, consistent actions that shows your capabilities.
I hope this information helps you on your journey. If you have any other questions, please reach out. Hope to talk soon!
Thank you,
Dwight
