How did you know that you wanted to become a welder?

I am a high school student from a small town and want to become a welder. I want to know some good advice or overview of how a normal day looks like and what made you want to be a welder.

A day in the life of a welder can be quite different depending on your specific role, but here's a simple path to get started in this exciting field:

1) Visit local welding shops and chat with the welders. Ask them questions like: Did you attend welding school? How long have you been welding? What are the pay rates? Does your shop hire helpers or apprentices? What are the working hours? What other welding jobs are available nearby?

2) Search online for welding schools in your area. Find out details like the length of the courses for basic structural welding and pipe welding, costs, and if financing is available.

3) Talk to school counselors to see if welding classes are offered at your local junior high or high school. If they are, take advantage of them when you can.

4) Focus on algebra and trigonometry in school. Treat your studies seriously, as they are crucial for your future career.

5) After high school, you can either enroll in a welding school or start as a helper or apprentice. Both paths involve working hard, often 8-10 hours a day, but they are rewarding.

6) If you go to welding school, you can land an entry-level job in about a year, with help from the school's job placement services.

7) If you start as an apprentice, explore all local welding shops or construction companies for opportunities within driving distance.

8) Work hard and enjoy learning your craft.

9) Throughout this journey, use the internet to learn everything you can about welding, including techniques and equipment.
