What happens if you want to switch your major before you start college?

I am 99.9% sure I want to be a Biochemistry major. The lingering question is whether I should be Biochemistry or Chemistry. Is my college advisor the right person to call?

Both options likely share several foundational freshman-year classes, so there may be some flexibility to align them. I’d recommend reaching out to the school’s academic office to compare the course requirements and see where they overlap.

If there’s a strong match, ask whether you can adjust your schedule or officially switch programs. If it can’t be changed right away, you may still be able to take the overlapping courses in your first semester while things get sorted out for the following term.

It’s also worth speaking directly with a professor or advisor to better understand each path and confirm it fits your interests. Since you already feel confident about the direction, I’d move quickly on exploring the change before scheduling deadlines pass.

Definitely! Reaching out to your academic advisor is a great first step. They can help you understand the differences between the two programs and guide you in choosing the one that suits you best.

In your first year, you'll mostly take general education classes, and you don't have to decide on a major until your sophomore year. This gives you plenty of time to make your choice. Plus, many of the courses overlap between majors, so if you switch, those classes can count as electives.

No need to rush your decision. College is all about exploring and discovering what you enjoy.

Good luck, and enjoy the journey!
