How much of an affect will AI have on the field of anesthesiology ?

I'm in 12th grade and part of the medical academy at my high school. In college I plan on majoring in Biology. After my undergrad I plan on attending CAA school to become an anesthesiology assistant.

Sandeep’s Answer

Hello Hailey,

AI will likely support anesthesiology rather than replace it. It can help with monitoring patient vitals, predicting risks, and assisting with data analysis, which can improve safety and efficiency.

However, roles like anesthesiology assistants require real-time decision-making, patient care, and hands-on responsibility. Things AI cannot replace. The field is expected to evolve with technology, but trained professionals will remain essential.

Studying in 12th grade with a medical academy and planning ahead is great to stay abreast your goals. Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant (CAA) program will definitely keep you competitive, but at the same time maintain your focus on building a strong science GPA (especially biology, chemistry, and physics) while completing key prerequisites like anatomy, physiology, and organic chemistry during your Biology degree. Besides that an important aspect is to have hands-on clinical exposure and I am sure when the time comes you will be looking for real world internships and other sources.
Anesthesiology requires rapid adaptation and accountability . It requires making judgements with incomplete information in a very fast changing environment. AI can increasingly help with monitoring, prediction, and optimization since anesthesia is data rich. It can flag lag early signs of complications (like hypotension or hypoxia), suggest drug dosing adjustments, and assist with documentation and workflow but the field itself is still very human centric. Knowing how to use AI will help you in many ways and it is always important to understand and know the latest technology in the operating room. It will only enhance your skills and knowledge. Keep the momentum in studies and best of luck!

Hector’s Answer

Hi Hailey,
AI will have a real effect on anesthesiology, mostly by supporting anesthesia teams (including CAAs), not replacing them.
Where you’ll see it:

-Smarter monitoring + early warnings (spotting risk patterns in vital signs)
-Decision support (helping anticipate issues like hypotension)
-Less admin work (documentation and summaries)

What won’t change: anesthesia is high‑stakes, so clinical judgment, hands-on skills, and supervision stay central.
If you’re doing Biology → CAA, focus on physiology/pharmacology, plus basic stats/evidence reading so you can judge AI tools.
