How do I know if the path I'm on is the right one?

I am scared that I am going to college for something that I won't be good at or feel fulfilled in this current path. #Spring26

Steward "Tony"’s Answer

Ask 20 Professionals what they majored in. Then ask them what they do now. Then ask them when did they change direction? You will find millionaires with no degree, plummers making $250k a year, Managers who are tyrants and others who are leaders.

So sit down and write out what you love doing in your spare time, which if you had a choice and could get paid for it, you would jump in to it quickly.
Life is not how much you make, its how much you spend. invest in the wrong education, get stuck in a job because of its loans and financial commitments are real life must do's when your learning is over. You must be happy with your decision and realistic about the results you wish to achieve.

No one has ever uttered these last words "I Should Have Spent More Time At The Office"
Enjoy Your Life and it will all fall into place.

Karen’s Answer

Hi Maya, Very few people start college with absolute certainty about their future, and that’s okay. Your degree is just one part of your journey. It doesn’t lock you into one career for the rest of your life.

I actually started university studying a degree economics because I thought it was the “right” choice. Along the way, I realised it wasn’t where my passion was, so I changed direction and graduated with a Bachelor of Business, majoring in HR and Marketing. That decision led me to a very successful career in marketing and I genuinely enjoy. Looking back, changing paths wasn’t a setback, it was part of finding the right fit.

Instead of asking yourself, “Is this the perfect path?” try asking, “What am I learning about myself?” Every class, internship, part-time job, or conversation helps you discover what energises you and what doesn’t.

Don’t be afraid to adjust your course as you grow. Success isn’t about getting every decision right the first time. It’s about being willing to learn, adapt, and keep moving forward. The fact that you’re thinking carefully about your future tells me you’re already approaching it with intention, and that’s a great foundation to build on.

All the best Maya!

Ali’s Answer

Hi Maya! There is never only one path. I went to school for a specific field and thought I would have a specific job in that field upon graduation and follow that career path. I never did that specific job within my industry but still feel fulfilled and am viewed as a leader within my industry. You are never pigeonholed if you don't allow yourself to be. Look for opportunities to learn as much as you can in relation to the path you are on or anything else you are interested in, not just learning opportunities that are directly on your path. This will allow you to explore more and move on from your current path if it turns out its not for you.
