What are some things I can do while in college to make myself more appealing to the job market?

I am planning to major in both psychology and business, but I still worry about landing a fulfilling job after college because of the struggle most people have getting hired at most places. How can I build myself up during this four-year period at college to look best on a resume or to HR?

Hi Abigail!

That’s a great question! This type of question was one I’ve often reflected on from my own college experience. While there are many ways to build both your skills and your resume, I’d highly recommend getting involved in extracurricular activities if you have the opportunity. Beyond maintaining a strong academic record, participating in clubs, groups, or volunteer organizations can be very rewarding.

Specifically, I would suggest exploring psychology and business clubs, as they often host events where you can connect with professionals, gain insights into their day-to-day work, and build meaningful relationships. There may even be opportunities to take on leadership roles within these clubs, which can be a strong asset on your resume. As the saying goes, "it’s not always what you know, but who you know!"

Overall, involvement in college clubs enhances your resume by showcasing important skills like leadership, teamwork, communication, and time management. It also reflects your initiative, commitment, and ability to balance multiple responsibilities—while providing valuable networking opportunities!

Besides joining extracurricular activities to grow in different areas, look for internships to gain real-world experience you can't get in school. Internships can help you learn the skills needed for psychology or business roles. They also allow you to adjust your resume and identify areas you need to improve to get ready for work.

I would focus on making connections - internships, business clubs, networking events, etc. I would also try to make connections with your professors because they can offer advice for after graduation and potentially offer some connections. Also, any additional certifications, minors, concentrations, etc. that you can pick up while in school are always helpful to have. Find out what is in demand and see if you can find a way to study it or get certified in it. Anything you can do to distinguish yourself from others is key to finding a job amongst others with similar credentials.
