Will there be career opportunities for a major in hospitality and a minor in fashion & merchandising?

I'm a high school senior and I just declared my major in hospitality. I love fashion and I wanted to know if there are career opportunities that I can pursue with this major that still relate to fashion/the fashion industry.

Hi Jessiah,

That's an interesting combination! I think there could be interesting opportunities out there for you at the intersection of hospitality and fashion, but they might be hard to come by, at least initially. Making contacts in the fashion industry and with high-end event planners would be really important to land a job where you want to be.

I am thinking your prime target could be fashion houses and event planners for fashion shows. Other options would be wedding planners and large hotels that host big events. Not every job will be strong on the fashion end, but you'll get experience and you can build from there.

Hi Jessiah, I worked as a retail buyer for a decade but recently switched to a role in real estate focusing on customer experience strategy. With the current economy, fashion jobs might be more challenging to find. I suggest trying to get an internship in either field while you're in college. You might have better chances in the hotel industry. Based on Karin's advice, wedding or event planning could be a great opportunity to use your creativity, and there will always be demand in this area. I would love to try it myself!
