How do you make sure that you do not overexert yourself in college? Like, how do I make sure I am not over-scheduled and constantly stressed in school-- I want to still be able to do fun things as well!

Everyone's college experience is different, and I think this requires a bit of reflectiveness of what works best for you. Just because one person might be taking a certain amount of classes & being apart of x number of extracurriculars, that doesn't mean it is the "right" way for you. The great thing about college is that it is broken up in semesters, or for me, it was quarters. So you ultimately get a reset mid-year or quarterly to adjust your academic workload or other involvements. I would recommend that after every period, take the time to reflect on what worked, could you do more here or there, or what didn't work & come up with actionable ways to make it so you don't get burnt out. Ultimately college is to advance and learn, but your professional and academic growth will be hindered if your mental well-being isn't a focus. So take the time to enjoy the personal things that make you happy as well.

I will answer from perspective of rest. I learned the value of rest and self care after struggling with burnout in my profession as a physician.
Relentless studying may feel productive, but without adequate rest, learning suffers. Sleep and downtime help the brain consolidate memories, improve attention, and regulate emotions—all essential for academic success. When self‑care is sacrificed, stress rises and efficiency drops, often leading to burnout. Prioritizing sleep, breaks, movement, and nutrition isn’t a distraction from achievement; it’s what allows the brain to perform at its best. Treat rest as part of your study plan, not a reward after exhaustion. High performers protect their energy as carefully as their time. Compassion for self cannot be overemphasized.
