Give me an example of how you dealt with an ethical dilemma at work.

This could be a situation where it was necessary to wight the positives and negatives of the different outcomes of a decision in order to act in the patient's best interest.

Heather’s Answer

Personally, I work in the telecommunications field. I worked for a person who was having a relationship with someone in a different channel within our orgaization. After suspecting some behaviors were happening, it was confirmed by my peer that this person was violating the code of conduct for our organization and she was told by this other person exactly what she had done. She apporached me to get my take on the situation, and due to the nature of the situation I immediately explained that she had a duty to act and she needed to call Human Resources. This led to that person being let go from the company. Had we just sat on that information and not reported it to the proper channel, we could have ended up in bigger "hot water" so to speak. Always go with your gut. It's okay to go against the grain, and stand up for what's right.

Hwal’s Answer

Meryl,

The first thing I thought of was asking someone for work with that you trust for advice. This could be for colleague or supervisor, and I often do this to gain more insight before combining it with what I already know from education and experience to make a decision. Since you mentioned patient, having an honest conversation with the patient might also be helpful, depending on what the dilemma is. I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Hwal
