How valuable is running a pop-culture fashion and trend breakdown platform when applying for costume or fashion design roles?
I am currently aiming to build a career in fashion design and costume styling. Alongside my studies, I actively run an online fashion platform called Washington Outfits, where I break down iconic outfit designs, pop-culture fashion trends, and celebrity costume choices from TV and film.
Working on this project has helped me develop skills in trend forecasting, visual analysis, and garment breakdowns.
I’d love to hear from industry professionals:
How do hiring managers in fashion or costume design view candidates who actively document and analyze fashion trends through their own platform?
What is the best way to structure this real-world experience in a portfolio or resume alongside formal design coursework?

As a Fashion Industry professional for about 30 years, I can assure you that your online presence is extremely valuable.
In addition to sharpening your skills in trend forecasting, keeping on top of all the fashion news and celebrity clientele’s tastes, analyzing outfits, etc. your ‘side hustle’ builds up your online following and one day might become your database for your own business’ clientele.
To make it stand out in your portfolio, mention the web address and provide some screen shots showcasing your trend analysis, for example, or a dialogue with the audience, or whatever you find valuable about your site.
Be prepared to answer some questions about it during the interview, too.
Keep up your amazing work! Just be sure that it’s ‘in addition to your studies’ not ‘instead of your studies’
