What Can You Do With A BSPS?

What quality of job (pay & technicality) can one expect with solely a Bachelors of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences? Is it worth it/feasible to work (primarily to afford further education), or should one just go straight for a graduate degree in something else (ex. Medicinal Chemistry) and acquire a higher paying job afterwards to pay off student debt? Is there a solid guarantee of such a well-paying job with a graduate degree like that?

It's great that you are interested in pharmacy or maybe in healthcare professions in general.

It is important to note that a bachelor degree in pharmaceutical sciences alone does not allow you to get licensed as a pharmacist. Many students who major in pharmaceutical sciences in undergrad plan to go to pharmacy school, medical school or dental school later to become a pharmacist, physician or dentist. But that's a long path from undergrad (and you don't need to decide on that right now).

That doesn't mean that there are no career paths with a BS in pharmaceutical sciences alone though. A bachelor in BSPS is a 4-year program and you are going to study biology, chemistry, physics, and calculus in your foundation years and then take more specialized courses in medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, drug action mechanisms, dosage formulation, and regulatory compliance.

Typical jobs with a BSPS are in pharmaceutical, biotechnology or cosmetics companies in research, formulation, quality control, regulatory affairs or marketing and product management. There are clinical as well as non-clinical jobs.

Hi! If you decide to pursue a BSPS in Massachusetts, consider getting internships or co-op experience with biotech or pharma companies in areas like Boston, Cambridge, Waltham, or Framingham. Having both a BSPS and hands-on experience is much more powerful than just the degree by itself. Good luck!

BCPS can accelerate your career to get higher level positions quickly but it is not necessary and can be very costly to maintain. If you want to specialize in certain areas such as infectious diseases, oncology, ambulatory care then certification is necessary but no guarantees! Your career can be limited once you specialize, however if you want to switch direction.

Do you think a OrgoChem PhD would be more advantageous than a MedChem PhD towards securing a bench job in big pharma? Is a BSPS a good undergrad degree to support that? I'm inclined towards it in order to leave my options open for other grad school paths, like PharmD ( strongly opposed to the idea of working pharmacy right now, but I may feel differently in 4 years and I want to leave my options open). I hear the hands-on experience you acquire in undergrad is more important than the name of your degree when it comes to being accepted in any PhD program. What can a first year do to set themselves up for success in that regard? Patience
