As a mining electrical engineer, the path usually starts with earning a degree in electrical engineering and building a strong foundation in math, physics, and problem-solving. During school, internships, co-op programs, and networking with professionals in the mining industry can make a huge difference. Many engineers also gain experience through entry-level engineering roles before specializing in mining operations.

Early in my career, the most critical skills were technical problem-solving, communication, and a willingness to keep learning.

In mining especially, safety awareness and the ability to work effectively with people from different backgrounds and trades are extremely important. Being dependable, asking questions, and learning from experienced mentors helped me grow much faster than I could have on my own.

My advice would be to focus on building both your technical skills and your people skills. Employers want engineers who can solve problems, collaborate with teams, and adapt to new challenges. Every internship, project, and learning opportunity helps build that foundation.

Keep exploring your interests and don't be afraid to ask questions along the way. The fact that you're already thinking about your future career is a great sign. You've got this, and your curiosity today can open doors to amazing opportunities tomorrow!

Explore opportunities not just with mining companies, but also with EPC firms, mining contractors, engineering consultancies, equipment manufacturers, and maintenance companies like Rio Tinto, BHP, Anglo American, Barrick Mining, and Worley. Focus on building skills in areas like industrial power, motors and drives, PLCs, SCADA, instrumentation, protection, commissioning, maintenance, reliability, and troubleshooting. Take advantage of practical training through Siemens SITRAIN, Rockwell Automation Training, Schneider Electric University, and employer hands-on programs.

Pursue certifications that fit your desired role, such as those in automation, electrical safety, reliability, or condition monitoring. Learn about ETAP, relevant standards, mining equipment, industrial networking, and basic data analysis. Join organizations like AusIMM, CIM, IEEE, and local mining associations to gain access to mentoring, technical events, conferences, site visits, and professional connections. Get involved in shadowing, volunteering, and hands-on projects, and make sure to document your achievements. While virtual training is helpful, employers value experience with real equipment, technicians, safety procedures, and production challenges.
