Are there any risks to taking courses on a pass/fail basis?

If I'm applying to medical school, would it look bad on an application if I took a few core classes, like history, on a pass/fail basis? #premed #passfail

Hi Nisha,
I think pass/fail courses are great for all courses except your prerequisite courses for medical school. They will want to see the grade you received in bio, chem, stat, etc. Otherwise, a pass/fail course seems like a great idea.

I think if your overall GPA is strong (I'll let you define) it won't matter. You don't want to give the impression that you took them pass fail because you were concerned about getting a good grade.

Having said that taking a history course pass/fail is much different than taking bio or chem pass fail. You would want to have a good explanation for the latter.

The only thing I would advise is to not pass/fail any classes for your major. This may come across wrong and be difficult to explain in med school interviews. However, I don't see it being an issue for the basics like history. It could be a good strategy to pass/fail classes like this to maintain a certain GPA since these do not count towards overall GPA.
