Hi - Working in New York City at 15 is a great way to build independence, gain experience, and support your family.

---

## Step 1: Get Your Working Papers (Required)

Before applying anywhere, New York State law requires 14- and 15-year-olds to hold an **Employment Certificate (Blue Working Papers)**. Without these, employers cannot legally hire you.

1. **Pick up the form:** Get a New York State Working Papers application from your school’s guidance counselor or administrative office. You can also download the application directly from the [NYC Department of Education Working Papers Portal](https://www.schools.nyc.gov/get-involved/students/working-papers?utm_source=gemini).
2. **Gather your documentation:**
* **Parent/Guardian Signature:** A parent or guardian must sign Section 1.
* **Proof of Age:** A birth certificate, U.S. passport, or official state ID.
* **Doctor's Note:** A physical exam note from within the last 12 months stating you are physically fit to work.
* **Schooling Record:** A NYC public school ID, recent report card, or school verification letter.

3. **Submit:** Return the completed paperwork to your guidance office (or nearest NYC public high school office if school is on break) to receive your blue card.

## Step 2: Where to Look for Jobs at 15

### City Programs & Internships

* **Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP):** NYC's official youth employment initiative pays teens minimum wage for summer placements across various industries. Apply via the [NYC Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD)](https://www.nyc.gov/site/dycd/services/jobs-internships/summer-youth-employment-program-syep.page?utm_source=gemini).
* **Parks & Community Centers:** The [NYC Parks Department](https://www.nycgovparks.org/?utm_source=gemini) and local community organizations (like the YMCA or Boys & Girls Club) frequently hire teens for seasonal, recreation, or youth programs.

### Local Businesses & Neighborhood Services

* **Small Retail & Supermarkets:** Neighborhood bodegas, grocery stores, bakeries, ice cream shops, and independent delis are often the most open to hiring 15-year-olds for stocking shelves, sweeping, or cashiering.
* **Neighborhood Side Gigs:** Pet sitting/dog walking, babysitting, tutoring younger children, or doing yard work/chores for neighbors don't require formal working papers.

### Online Job Platforms

Search platforms like [Indeed](https://www.indeed.com?utm_source=gemini) or [ZipRecruiter](https://www.ziprecruiter.com?utm_source=gemini) using keywords like `"15 year old"` or `"teen entry level"` combined with `"New York, NY"`.

## Step 3: How to Apply

1. **In-Person Visits:** Walk into local neighborhood shops during quiet hours (e.g., 2 PM – 4 PM on weekdays). Ask politely to speak with a manager, dress neatly, and ask if they are hiring part-time or seasonal help. Bring a printed resume or contact sheet.
2. **Build a Basic Resume:** List your contact information, school, current GPA, volunteer work, clubs, household responsibilities, and any soft skills (e.g., punctuality, teamwork, bilingual abilities).
3. **Know Your Legal Hours:** When school is in session, 15-year-olds can work up to **3 hours on a school day**, **8 hours on a non-school day**, up to **18 hours total per week**, and only between **7 AM and 7 PM**.
